Mackinac Island, Michigan

We took a day trip to Mackinac Island when we were in Michigan, and despite the fact that it was kind of a cloudy, rainy day, we really enjoyed ourselves.  While I don’t usually like to pay a resort fee, we paid our $10 for day entry into The Grand Hotel, enjoyed their front porch rocking chairs, their beautiful gardens, their generous free (ok, $10) wifi, and their delicious afternoon tea (although that was extra—but worth it). If you don’t know anything about the island, it’s one of those throwback places where the only vehicle on the island is the ambulance, and everything else is delivered either by bicycle or horse and cart.  It’s also a very good place to walk around, and we found some nice trails through the woods and hiked a bit.

I guess the thing to do is to stay overnight at the hotel, but when we saw the signs that said that ladies may not wear slacks and gentlemen must wear a jacket and tie after 6pm, we knew it was time for us to catch the ferry back home.  This is not that kind of trip.  Well, truthfully David doesn’t even own a jacket.   So we chose a half-pound of fudge from the many different purveyors and kinds, and then caught the ferry back and drove back to Traverse City for the night.  Here are a few photos from our day.
